TRIP ADVISOR REVIEW
“A gem of a beach ecolodge on the coast of Ecuador”
Reviewed December 15, 2011
I live in Ecuador for almost 17 years now, and have wanted to visit Chirije - pronounced chee-ree'-hay -- for about ten years. I finally had the great pleasure of a three day stay. Chirije is an small and outstanding beachfront eco-lodge which has been declared an archeological site and with good reason. The owners and staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly, and we enjoyed the hikes and loved the archeological class and tour which owner Patricio gave to us and some Italian journalists on our first morning.
The beach itself is exquisite, well packed and wide, with warm water and gentle waves - perfect for swimming and body surfing, and for beach walks to your heart's content. One has to enter and exit Chirije during the low tides, which makes timing a visit just a little tricky -- but you end up on literally miles of deserted beach around Chirije, so it is absolutely worth the effort, plus the ride is quite enjoyable. Perspective guests should contact Patricio the owner -who speaks perfect English by the way - before coming so he can organize transport from Bahia or from the airport in Manta.
The cottages are comfortable and pleasant as is the social area and dining area. The food was quite tasty, especially the shrimp from the family's organic shrimp farm. Ask for the beachfront suite if it is available. It is heavenly.(The president of Ecuador stayed there with his family just a couple of weeks before us.)
Patricio, an excellent surfer in his time, offers beginning to intermediate surfing lessons and although we did not avail ourselves this visit, it seems like it would be great fun. Diving and snorkeling can also be arranged with some advance planning. Very helpful were Orlando, their local host who was always looking out for our well-being and comfort, and Mariquita, who was hosting and cooking while we were there. We would return to Chirije in a heartbeat, and we plan to get back soon!
You might also want to stay at owner Patricio's charming boutique hotel on the ocean in Bahia, called the Casa Grande, which has a lovely pool and gardens. From there you can enjoy strolling the waterfront attractions of this charming coastal city. In Bahia, go the archeology museum with one of the best collections of ancient artifacts and ceramics dating back over six thousand years. Don't miss the tour of Isla Corazon, an inspiring and dramatic community ecological project to reforest this mangrove island, where you will encounter a large number (of the many thousands) of sea birds which call it home. You will also learn first hand about the deforestation of mangroves by reckless shrimp farming.
Room Tip: Try for the oceanfront suite or ask Patricio for the best cottage available.See more room tips
